Get career help in new workshop
Career Check-up, a new workshop, will be presented from
noon-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, in Multipurpose Room B of
the Trabant University Center.
Speakers will provide information on how to conduct an
annual career review, resume development, career planning
tools, job search strategies and interviewing techniques.
Richie Holland, career development, and Karen Garrett,
employment services, will make the presentations.

Slide/talk today in Georgetown
"A River Runs Through It: Daily Life in the Mekong
Delta, Southern Vietnam" is the topic of a slide lecture to
be presented at 7, tonight, in the Lecture Hall of the
Higher Education Building in Georgetown.
Mark McLeod, history, will deliver the talk, which
features more than 70 slides from his summer 1996 research
trip to that country.

Pop artist's works on display at UD
The artwork of R.B. Kitaj, one of the most prominent
figures of the Pop Art movement, will be the featured in an
exhibition at the University in May and June.
"A World Undercover: R.B. Kitaj's 'In Our Time'" will
be on view at the University Gallery in Old College from May
16 to June 29, with an opening reception scheduled from 4:30
to 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 16. Both the exhibition and
reception are free and open to the public.
Kitaj, an American painter and graphic artist who works
mainly in England, has been an important part of the Pop Art
movement since 1975. Fourteen of his silk screens will be
included in the exhibit, which was produced by students in
the UD Museum Studies Program.
The University Gallery is located on the second floor
of Old College, on Main Street in Newark. The gallery is
open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and
from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Disability

Rocket launch at Henlopen park
The first high-altitude, sub-orbital rocket launch from
Delaware will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at
Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. The raindate for the
liftoff of the Super Loki Sounding Rocket is 11 a.m.,
Sunday, May 11.
This educational program is sponsored by the Aerospace
Education Department and Delaware AeroSpace Education
Foundation, in conjunction with Spaceport Florida Authority,
the Aerospace States Association and the Office of the
Lieutenant Governor.
The event and other exhibits are part of the daylong
activities, scheduled from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The public is
invited to watch the launch of the 11-foot-tall, solid
propellant, sounding rocket.

A cappella in Bacchus May 16
The Deltones, a coed a cappella singing group, will
celebrate its sixth anniversary with a spring concert at 8
p.m., Friday, May 16, in the Bacchus Theatre of the Perkins
Student Center.

Senior Send-Off set for May 16
The annual Senior Send-Off celebration will be held
from 3-6 p.m., Friday, May 16, on the lawn in front of Old
College. Free T-shirts will be given to seniors and music
will be provided by the Red Alert Band.

Corky Siegel on UD stage tonight
Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues, a brilliant notational
blend of classical and blues styles, will perform at 8,
tonight, in Mitchell Hall.
The group's performance is filled with good-natured
songs, which range from folksy, foot-stompin' numbers to
rollicking ragtime romps.
He has recorded 16 albums and written and performed
works for Arthur Fiedler and the San Francisco Symphony, the
Grant Park Symphony and for the National Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets for the band's UD performance are $10 for the
general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff and alumni and $5
for children 12 and under.

Garden entrance dedication set
The Charles Dunham Entranceway is the latest addition
to the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens.
A formal, public dedication of the area will take place
at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, and the gardens will be open
from 12:30-3 p.m., with Friends of the UDBG located at
strategic sites around the gardens to act as guides and
answer questions.
The entranceway includes a brick herringbone patio and
a gazebo, surrounded by a garden of native plants, with
points of interest that change with the seasons.
Dunham is a founder of the Botanic Gardens and was a
member of the plant and soil sciences faculty from 1954-84.
Y-Chromes to give concert on Mall
The Y-Chromes a cappella group will present a free,
public concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, on the north
end of the Mall, near Harter and Brown residence halls.
The program is sponsored by the Resident Student
Association.

Fashion show in Trabant Center
The third annual Synergy Fashion Show will take place
at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, in the Multipurpose Room of the
Trabant University Center.
The program, organized and conducted primarily by
merchandising and apparel students in the College of Human
Resources, will be presented on a t-shaped runway. Viewers
will see approximately 60 designs, ranging from casual wear
to formal wear, funky to classic, modeled by 45 models.
Cost is $3 per person, and proceeds will be donated to
Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.
E-52 to present 'The Bacchae'
Euripides' classic drama The Bacchae will be presented
by E-52 Student Theatre at 8, tonight through Saturday, May
10.
All performances will be held in the Bacchus Theatre of
the Perkins Student Center.
Tickets are $5 for the general public, and $4 for
University students, faculty and staff. For more

Defense history is topic of program
David Ames, urban affairs and public policy, will
present a program about the history of defense and military
activities in Delaware from the time of the Revolutionary
War at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17, at the Dover Air Force
Base Museum.
Ames will present an overview of military sites in the
First State, examining Delaware coastal defense from the War
of 1812 to the era of the Cold War. Comments will be made
about Fort Delaware, Fort DuPont, Fort Salisbury and the
Dover Air Force Base.
The slide lecture will explore and illustrate how
extensive a role Delaware has played in the nation's
defense.
The lecture, being conducted during National
Preservation Week, is part of the Dover Air Force Base
Museum's regularly scheduled Community Days. Other
activities include plane and weapons displays and
demonstrations.

Poetry reading in Kirkbride Hall
Greg Djanikian will read from his poetry at 7:30,
tonight, in 004 Kirkbride Lecture Hall. He also will
announce the winners of the American Academy of Poets Award,
the Thomas Molyneux Prose Awards and the Elda Wolleager
Gregory Poetry Awards, all for work that appears in this
year's Caesura, the University of Delaware student literary
magazine.
A graduate of the Syracuse University Creative Writing
Program, Djanikian has written several books of poetry,
including The Man in the Middle (Carnegie-Mellon University
Press, 1984), Falling Deeply into America (Carnegie-Mellon
University Press, 1989), and About Distance (Carnegie-Mellon
University Press, 1995).
In addition, his poems have appeared in The American
Scholar, Antioch Review, Boulevard, Cimarron Review, Four
Quarters, Iowa Review, The National, Poet Lore, Poetry and
many others. He is currently on the faculty at the
University of Pennsylvania.

Summer trips for students, staff
The Activities and Programs Office is conducting three
Saturday bus trips this summer for students, faculty and
staff.
Included are trips to New York City on June 1 and July
19 and a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park on
June 28.
The New York City trips, with an open itinerary, are
$20 for full-time undergraduates with a UD ID and $25 for
all others. One guest is permitted per UD ID. The bus leaves
the Trabant University Center at 8 a.m. and leaves New York
City for the return trip to Newark at 8 p.m.
The Great Adventure package is $32 per person for all
participants. Family travelers must have at least one UD ID
and an adult must accompany children on the trip. The bus
leaves the Trabant University Center at 9 a.m. and leaves
Great Adventure for the return trip to Newark at 8 p.m.
Reservations are being accepted from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
in the Special Programs Office, in Room 218 of the Trabant
University Center.
