Shakespearean expert to perform May 23
David Howey, a former member of the Royal Shakespeare
Company and a Shakespearean scholar, will perform
Shakespearean pieces relating to identity in his original
one-man performance of Shakespeare: Everything and Nothing.
Sponsored in part by the Department of English, the
performance will take place at 8 p.m., Friday, May 23, in
the Chapel Street Theatre, 27 North Chapel St., Newark.
Admission is $5 at the door.
At the National Theatre, Howey has appeared on stage
with such actors as Sir Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright,
Christopher Plummer, Anthony Hopkins and Derek Jacobi.
He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1976 and
played numerous roles. Additionally, he has appeared in West
End productions and participated in three ACTER tours of the
U.S. His many television appearances include roles in Renoir
My Father, Thank You Comrades, The Maleness and Brideshead
Revisited.
Howey currently is an associate professor of speech at
the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He has taught
Shakespeare at the University of Pennsylvania and the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He also has experience
directing in England.
Sanford Robbins, director of the Professional Theatre
Training Program, said Howey's one-man show is
"exceptionally entertaining, original and thought
provoking."
His Newark appearance is produced by the After Dinner
Players.
