          Restructuring to change responsibilities, reporting

Arestructuring of units reporting to the Office of the
Provost was announced today by Provost Mel Schiavelli.
The new organization brings together units by function
and builds upon demonstrated areas of expertise, including
recruitment, retention and academic planning, Schiavelli
said.
Under the reorganization, to be effective July 1, the
position of vice provost for academic affairs will be
abolished and the units that currently report there will be
reassigned.
Vice Provost Margaret Andersen, sociology, will become
interim dean of the College of Arts and Science July 1,
replacing Mary Richards, who has resigned to return to
teaching. When a new dean is found, Andersen will return to
full-time teaching and research.
Under the restructuring, there are expanded roles for
Frederic A. Siegel, new vice provost for enrollment
services, who began his service at UD May 1, and for John C.
Cavanaugh, associate provost for graduate studies, who has
served as interim associate provost for admissions and
student financial aid.
Siegel will have responsibility for the Offices of
Admissions, Financial Aid, the Academic Services Center and
the University Registrar's Office. The Academic Services
Center, directed by Linda G. Gordon, has reported to
Andersen, and the Office of the University Registrar, headed
by Joseph V. DiMartile, currently reports to David E.
Hollowell, executive vice president.
Three other units that previously have reported to
Andersen also have been reassigned: The Delaware Geological
Survey, directed by Robert R. Jordan, and the University of
Delaware Press, directed by Donald C. Mell, English, will
report to Costel D. Denson, vice provost for research, and
the University Honors Program, directed by Robert F. Brown,
will report to Cavanaugh.
     Cavanaugh's current responsibility for graduate
curriculum planning and development has been expanded to
include undergraduate planning and development. His title,
effective July 1, will be vice provost for academic programs
and planning.
Cavanaugh will continue to have responsibility for
graduate studies, including graduate admissions and graduate
student financial aid.
In addition under the reorganization, two units that
have reported to Andersen will report directly to
Schiavelli-the Division of Continuing Education, directed by
Associate Provost Richard B. Fischer, and the Office of
International Programs and Special Sessions, directed by
Associate Provost Lawrence P. Donnelley.
