FIPSE director to visit on Sept. 23

Charles Karelis, director of the Fund for the Improvement of
Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), will visit the campus Sept. 23
and 24 and present a program about the agency's grant application
process.
FIPSE is a federal grant program associated with the U.S.
Department of Education that supports exemplary reform projects
in the area of teaching and learning. Currently, there are four
FIPSE funded projects at UD-"Establishing a Longitudinal Data
Base for Interinstitutional Cost Comparison," conducted by
Michael Middaugh, institutional research; "Interactive Jazz
Theory Lessons," directed by Michael Arenson, music, and Michael
Morgan, instructional technology; "North American Partnership in
Marine Policy/Coastal Zone Management Education," directed by
Biliana Cicin-Sain, marine studies; and "Multilayered Learning
Program for Problem-based Learning Classrooms," directed by
Deborah Allen, biology.
During his visit, Karelis plans to meet with the project
directors, discuss their current efforts and receive their input
on what makes UD an "innovation-friendly" environment. The
University of Delaware is one of 10 campuses the director is
visiting this fall based on the promise of their current FIPSE
projects and their support of and interest in innovation.
Karelis also will present a program for faculty and those
interested in applying for FIPSE grants at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept.
23, in Mitchell Hall. During that time, he will share with
members of the faculty and administration information on FIPSE's
programs and help novice grant writers understand the
organization's priorities and review process.
