            UDRF announces 11 award recipients for 1997-98
     
     The University of Delaware Research Foundation has
announced 11 awards for 1997-98, totaling $329,566.
     Established in 1942 as the Haskell Research Associates,
the foundation supports fundamental research in all fields
of science and engineering and focuses on assisting junior
faculty in research projects in promising areas. The awards
are determined by a committee representing area industries.
     The 11 award recipients are
      * Thomas S. Buchanan, mechanical engineering,
        "Biomechanics of  the Adolescent Wrist with
        Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis," $29,954;
      * Keith S. Decker, computer and information sciences,
        "A Distributed, Environment-centered Agent
        Framework," $29,736;
      * David A. Hutchins, marine studies, "Inter
        disciplinary Investigations into Competition for
        Iron between Marine Phytoplankton and Bacteria,"
        $30,000;
      * Paul T. Imhoff, civil and environmental
        engineering, "Mobilization of Nonaqueous Phase
        Liquids in Heterogeneous Soils," $29,959;
      * Rolf D. Joerger, animal and food sciences,
        "Phylogenetic Survey of the Intestinal Microbiota
        of Chicken (Gallus domesticus)," $29,919;
      * John T. Koh, chemistry and biochemistry, "Solid-
        phase Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Biostable
        Glycomimics for Drug  Discovery," $30,000;
      * Mary E. Miele, medical technology, "Chromosome 10-
        associated Genes in Human Malignant Melanoma,"
        $29,999;
      * Eugene G. Mueller, chemistry and biochemistry, "The
        Enzymology  of RNA Modification," $30,000;
      * Norbert Mulders, physics and astronomy, "Aerogel
        Based Magnetic Nano-composites," $29,999;
      * Daniel W. van der Weide, electrical engineering,
        "Localized FIR Spectroscopy with Scanning Probes,"
        $30,000; and
      * Hai Wang, mechanical engineering, "Soot Particulate
        Characterization-from Laboratory to
        Industrial/Residential Sources," $30,000.
