Awards
Stanley I. Sandler, Henry Belin du Pont Professor of
Chemical Engineering, has been elected by members of the
Commision 1.2 on Thermodynamics of the International Union
of Pure and Applied Chemistry to be Frederick Rossini
Lecturer for 1998. He will deliver the plenary lecture at
the 15th International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics
at University of Porto, Portugal, in July and prepare a
written version of the lecture for publication.
Services
Karl W. Ber, Distinguished Professor of Physics and
Solar Energy, participated as a board member in a meeting of
the Photonic Center, the Innovation Center of Optics,
Optoelectronics, Photovoltaics and Laser Technology, March
25 in Berlin-Adlershof. He also participated as management
adviser in meetings of WISTA, the science and technology
center in Berlin-Adlershof and initiated the establishment
of a joint university, institutes and industry committee on
surface science there.
John Knarr, physical therapy, recently returned from a
training camp for the U.S. Soccer Under 17 National Team in
San Diego, where he assisted the team in preparations for
World Championships in Egypt in September.
Mike Brey, athletics, was a guest panelist on the WTXF
Fox 29 television news program, Newsprobe April 13, during
which he discussed "College Sports-Education or Big
Business?"
Herbert E. Allen, civil and environmental engineering,
has been appointed to the National Research Council's
committee on environmental management technologies,
subcommittee on subsurface contaminants.
Nancy Schweda-Nicholson, linguistics, has been named to
the editorial board of the international journal Language
Problems and Language Planning.
