          Winning student soloists featured in April concert
     
     Winners of the 14th annual University of Delaware
Student Concerto Competition will be featured at a free,
public concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 27, in Loudis
Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
     Flutist Kathleen Hopwood, countertenor Dan Bubeck,
clarinetist Todd Hearn and marimba player Tomoko Azuma will
perform with a symphony orchestra composed of players from
major regional orchestras and conducted by Robert J.
Streckfuss, music.
     Azuma, a marimba student of Harvey Price, will perform
Concerto for Marimba by Ney Rosauro. Azuma, a graduate of
Middletown High School, is an applied music major at UD.
     Countertenor Dan Bubeck is a Wilmington native and
graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. A UD senior vocal
performance major and student of Melanie DeMent, he will
sing "Vivi tiranno," from Handel's Rodelinda and "Che faro
senza Euridice," from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice.
     The countertenor has been described as a male who sings
in the contralto/mezzo soprano range by blending chest and
head tones. They are most often heard performing music of
the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
     Todd Hearn, a Newark resident and graduate of Christina
High School, is a UD senior majoring in clarinet, with music
minors in saxophone and jazz studies. He has studied with
Peter Hill and Charles Salinger and is planning to pursue
graduate studies in clarinet and saxophone. He will play
Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto.
     Kathleen Hopwood, UD flute student of Eileen Grycky,
will perform Concerto for Flute by Carl Nielsen. A Severna
Park, Md., resident, Hopwood is majoring in biotechnology,
with a minor in applied music.
