Annual spring house tour April 27

The Human Resources Alumni Association will hold its
annual house tour from noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 27.
Thirteen homeowners in Newark, New Castle, Hockessin
and Landenberg, Pa., will open their doors to guests. The
homes, in colonial, contemporary or Georgian styles, have
been chosen for their historic interest, updated renovations
and unusual features.
Highlights include the basement of Red Fox Farm, once
used as part of the Underground Railroad, the original 1730
log portion of the Merestone House and the historic kitchen
in the Janvier Black House.
Another house features many African artifacts,
including rugs and textiles, while another has one of the
largest collections of antique music boxes in the U.S. At
another home, avid bird-watchers will enjoy a large
selection of nature prints and bird feeders.
House tour brochures serve as tickets and may be
purchased for $10 at Berties's Bag in New Castle, Born to
Craft in the Pike Creek Shopping Center, the Cheese Chalet
on Limestone Road, Kirk's Flowers in Suburban Plaza, in the
dean's office of the College of Human Resources in Alison
Hall and Bing's Bakery, Newark.
The day of the tour, tickets will be available at the
Armitage Inn, 2 The Strand, New Castle; the Cox home at 12
Autumnwood Drive, Hockessin; Shields Lumber, Route 41 and
Valley Road, Hockessin; at the Ninth Street Bookstore, 104
West Ninth St., Wilmington; and at the Casual Marketplace in
Hockessin Corner.
The house tour is a fundraiser for the alumni
association. Proceeds provide scholarships for incoming
freshmen in the college.
