On the job
I've been at the Unversity for eight years, and I'm now
working in Smith Hall. Working five days a week from 7 in
the morning to 3, my duties include working as the cashier,
being responsible for the money taken in and restocking the
food as needed.
"Between refilling the bagels and muffins, ringing up
students' purchases and keeping the place clean, I'm often
kept very busy. Things get especially hectic during the
change of class, with so many students wanting to eat. And,
they're always in a hurry!
"The best part of my job, though, is the kids. I
especially look forward to the 'regulars' I encounter every
day. Many times, I don't even have to be wearing my name tag
to get a friendly hello like, 'Hello, Ingrid. How's your day
been?' And that's a great feeling.
"I was out recently, having surgery, and when I
returned I was told frequently that I'd been missed, and
that, while I was away, many students asked about me every
day and wanted to know how I was recovering.
"When I returned, many students welcomed me back as
they came through the cashier's line. The friendly faces I
see day to day are, without a doubt, the best part of my
job."
