Janet Smith to enter Lacrosse Hall of Fame
Janet Smith, physical education, is one of just 10 men
and women being inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of
Fame by the Lacrosse Foundation at ceremonies on June 6 in
Baltimore.
Smith was cited as "an outstanding player who was also
an outstanding coach" and for her "noteworthy service to the
game of lacrosse over the years."
"I am excited about being selected for the Lacrosse
Hall of Fame. It is the sport's ultimate honor," Smith said.
A varsity player at Springfield Township High School in
Montgomery, Pa., she continued playing at Ursinus College.
After college, Smith became a high school coach and
came to UD from Sanford School in 1979, serving as head
women's lacrosse coach until 1989. She led the Blue Hens to
national championships in Division II in 1981 and 1982 and
in Division I in 1983. In the summer of 1995, she served as
a lacrosse coach in Japan.
In her playing career, Smith was selected for the U.S.
reserve team in 1968-69 and was a member of the U.S. team
from 1970-74. As a member of the U.S. touring team, Smith
went to Australia in 1969, to Great Britain and Ireland in
1970 and again to Great Britain in 1975, where the team set
a record of 12 wins and 0 losses on foreign soil.
Smith also has played field hockey and was UD assistant
coach from 1979-88.
With a master's degree from West Chester State
University and a doctorate in education from Delaware in
1995, Smith currently teaches in the teacher preparation
program for physical education.
