New concerto to be performed March 23
Aperformance of Murray Boren's Concerto for Piano and
Winds, featuring the UD Wind Ensemble, directed by Robert J.
Streckfuss, and pianist, Christine Delbeau, both of the
music department, will be held at 8 p.m., Sunday, March 23,
in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music
Building.
Commissioned by wind ensembles from UD, Brigham Young
University and the University of Nevada, and funded by the
Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, the concerto
premiered at the Eastern regional meeting of the Music
Educators' National Conference last month in Baltimore.
The March 23 concert will feature other original works
for wind band as well.
For the premier, composer Boren-who has written operas,
choral works, songs, chamber works and music for the
theatre-was on campus and rehearsed with the ensemble before
attending the Baltimore concert.
Delbeau, the soloist for the concerto, has been a
featured performer with the Delaware Symphony Orchestras and
has presented recitals in Boston's Jordan Hall, New York's
Carnegie Hall and in the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.,
where she represented the state of Delaware at the center's
25th anniversary celebration. Recent performances include
chamber music in Sienna, Italy, and at the Los Angeles
Museum of Art. In January, Delbeau performed in the
internationally acclaimed "Fiddlefest" in Zurich,
Switzerland, as collaborative artist with violinists Isaac
Stern and Diane Moore.
The Wind Ensemble consists of 46 wind and percussion
instrumentalists. Under the direction of Streckfuss, who
also conducts the Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey, the
group has toured Luxembourg, Germany and France.
