                   Fulbright applications available
     
     Applications for the 1998-99 Fulbright scholar awards
for U.S. faculty and professionals are now available and due
by Aug. 1.
     Aug. 1 is the deadline for lecturing and research
grants. Deadlines for special programs are May 1 for
distinguished Fulbright chairpersons in Western Europe and
Canada, and Nov. 1 for Fulbright seminars for international
education and academic administrators.
     Opportunities for lecturing or advanced research in
nearly l30 countries are available to faculty and
professionals outside academe. Almost all disciplines are
represented, including most areas in the arts and
humanities, social sciences, natural and applied sciences
and professional fields such as business, journalism and
law.
     Awards range from two months to a full academic year.
     Fulbright senior scholars must be U.S. citizens and
have a doctorate or a terminal degree in such fields as the
fine arts or comparable professional qualifications. For
lecturing awards, teaching experience is expected. Foreign
language skills are necessary for some countries, but most
lecturing assignments are in English.
     All academic ranks are encouraged. Academic
administrators, independent scholars, artists and
professionals from the private and public sector also
qualify.
     Funding is provided by the U.S. Information Agency on
behalf of the U.S. government and cooperating governments
and host institutions abroad.
