Arthur B. Metzner receives
Distinguished Service Award
Arthur B. Metzner, H. Fletcher Brown Professor of
Chemical Engineering Emeritus, has received the
Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Rheology.
Given at the discretion of the society's executive
committee, the Distinguished Service Award was instituted to
recognize exceptional service to the society and has been
given only three times in the past (1985, 1986 and 1992).
Metzner served as editor of the Journal of Rheology,
and under his leadership the stature and impact of the
journal increased, making it the most prestigious journal in
the field of rheology.
A graduate of the University of Alberta with a
doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Metzner came to the University in 1953 and chaired the
Department of Chemical Engineering from 1970-77.
Metzner has received many awards and honors during his
career, including the Bingham Medal from the Society of
Rheology. He is a member of the National Academy of
Engineering, one of the highest professional distinctions in
the field. In 1982, he received the Francis Alison Award,
which is given by the University to one faculty member each
year and honors scholarship, professional achievements and
dedication. In 1993, the Arthur B. Metzner Symposium was
held at Clayton Hall in recognition of his 40 years of
leadership and service.
