Grad student elected to national Catholic board
Kelvin Bentley, a graduate student in clinical
psychology, recently was elected to the board of the
National Catholic Student Coalition board as Northeast
Region representative at the organization's 13th annual
Leadership Conference in Milwaukee.
Bentley will serve as program chairperson, organizing
next winter's conference at Regis College in Denver. In
addition, he is alumni chairperson, developing a database
of those who have attended conferences in the past. The
national coalition also is creating a web page to serve the
needs of members with lists of events and membership
information.
This year's conference, Living Christ on Campus,
attended by approximately 375 students from colleges across
the country, gave a good perspective on campus ministry,
Bentley said. There were workshops and discussions and a
service day when conference members went out into the
community and worked in a soup kitchen and a food bank and
helped clean and paint an adult community center. A
conference highlight was a New Year's Eve mass, followed by
a dinner dance.
Bentley has been actively involved with Thomas More
Oratory, the on-campus Catholic student organization, as a
retreat leader and cochairperson of the graduate group. The
Delaware students work with Emmaus House and run bingo
games for the elderly. They also participate in prayer
activities, Bible study and a Sunday evening discussion
group.
"College students are busy people, and it's wonderful
when they share their time and energy. The group has given
me fellowship and a better perspective on life, focusing on
what is important," Bentley said.
Bentley, who is from Detroit, is a graduate of Wayne
State University.
Other Delaware students who attended the conference,
representing the Delmar Association of Catholic Students,
are junior Rebekah Pronovost and senior James Werber, who
are Northeast Regional Team members, senior Dan Crowley and
sophomore Rachel Moyer.
Kim Zitzner, pastoral associate at Thomas Moore
Oratory at UD, was named campus minister adviser for the
Northeast Region, which held its meeting in Newark in early
March.
