Frederic A. Siegel named new head of admissions
Frederic A. Siegel, assistant vice president for
enrollment management and director of admissions at George
Washington University, will become associate provost for
enrollment services, effective May 5, Provost Mel Schiavelli
announced today.
At UD, Siegel will promote and direct strategies for
recruitment, admissions and retention services. Under the
direction of the provost, he will supervise the offices of
Admissions, Financial Aid, the Registrar and the Academic
Services Center.
He replaces Bruce Walker, who left Delaware last
September to become director of admissions at the University
of Texas at Austin. John Cavanaugh, associate provost for
graduate studies, has served as interim associate provost
for admissions and student financial aid.
"I look forward to working with Fred Siegel,"
Schiavelli said. "He brings excellent management skills and
a wide range of related experience in college admissions,
particularly recruitment strategies and marketing. Fred also
has spent his professional career working in the population
corridor on the East Coast from which UD draws most of its
students. He can begin his job feeling at home and that can
only mean good things for Delaware."
"It is exciting for me to be joining this great
University whose reputation has been growing for some time
now," Siegel said. "I look forward to dedicating myself to
bringing great students here-from Delaware, from across the
nation and from around the world."
Despite shrinking numbers of college-age students
nationally and intense competition among schools on the
Eastern Seaboard, the University of Delaware has received
ever-increasing numbers of applications in recent years. In
fact, the overall applicant pool for the current academic
year was the largest of this decade, and the number of
applicants for the Class of 2001 already is larger than last
year at this time. Significantly, an increasing number of
students are accepting the offer of admission to UD,
reflecting its popularity and position as the college of
choice for many applicants.
Siegel has been affiliated with George Washington
University since 1991, serving as director of enrollment
management administration from 1991-93, then as executive
director of enrollment management and director of admissions
from 1993-96. This year, he was named assistant vice
president for enrollment management.
During his leadership there, the George Washington
admissions office received a special tribute from the
superintendent of the District of Columbia public schools,
and several admissions publications have won awards from the
American Corporate Identity Design Competition, the Art
Directors Club of Greater Washington and the Council for the
Support and Advancement of Education (CASE).
From 1990-91, he was associate vice president for
enrollment management and planning at the University of
Bridgeport. From 1980-90 and from 1977-79, he held a variety
of positions at Boston University, including director of
admissions, director of administration for enrollment
services, assistant to the vice president for administration
and senior assistant director of admissions. He was director
of graduate admissions at Oakland University in Rochester,
Mich., in 1979-80.
A member of the National, New England and
Potomac/Chesapeake Associations for College Admission
Counseling and the American Association of Collegiate
Registrars and Admissions Officers, Siegel testified on
behalf of higher education before a House Judiciary
Subcommittee hearing on the "Polly Klass Bill" last year
His recent honors include induction into the Omicron
Delta Kappa honor society in 1996; the Laurel, Md., Regional
Hospital "Best Friend Award" in 1995; and the John Dewey
Academy Parents' Award for Outstanding Service in 1994.
A graduate of Brandeis University, Siegel received his
master's degree at the University of Michigan, where he also
completed work toward his doctorate in classics.
