                     Natural history programs set

The Society of Natural History of Delaware has planned
several spring outings and evening programs for its members
and friends, and three programs are being presented by UD
faculty and staff.
Sherry Kitto, plant and soil science, will present a
program on propagating native plants at 9 a.m., Saturday,
March 1, at the greenhouses behind Townsend Hall. She will
demonstrate new methods of propagating perennials, allowing
gardeners access to native species without resorting to
collecting from the wild. Reservations can be made by
calling Al Matlack at 239-5383.
Bill Hall, marine studies, will present a program on
the marshes and beaches of Delaware Bay in central Kent
County at Big Stone Beach from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday,
March 22. The group will meet at the Colonial Inn on the
west side of Route 1, just north of the Milford exits. To
carpool from northern Delaware, meet at 9:45 a.m. at the
Park & Ride lot at the intersection of Rt. 1 and Rt. 273.
Bring lunch and wear appropriate clothing. For information,
call Oliver Crichton at 754-5588.
John Kraft, H. Fletcher Brown Professor of Geology,
will discuss "5,000 Years of Environmental Change in Turkey"
at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, in Room 004 Kirkbride
Hall. In his study of Ephesus, he documents the relationship
between the civilization and its environment, pointing out
that 20th-century societies were not the first to suffer
from environmental problems.
