               Lula Washington dance troupe to
                  perform in Mitchell Hall

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre, hailed as "'90s
modern dance at its best" by Honolulu Weekly and called
"clearly inspirational" by the San Francisco Examiner, will
perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, as a part of the
University's Performing Arts Series. The performance will
take place in Mitchell Hall.
As part of the Blue and Gold Club Series, lunch
featuring barbecue beef, spare ribs, collard greens and more
will be offered at 2 p.m. at the Blue and Gold Club.
The 10-member company, founded in 1980 by Lula
Washington, is one of the premiere African-American arts
institutions in the country. The ensemble showcases
demanding choreography, and a singular blend of African,
modern and ballet techniques as well as theatricality.
Washington's works have been praised for their powerful
depiction of the African-American experience and their
strong political and social commentary.
Washington has received numerous awards, including an
NEA choreography fellowship, the YWCA Silver Anniversary
Community Leadership Award and, recently, the California
Dance Educators Award. She also serves on several nationally
recognized arts panels.
Tickets for the general public are $15 for the show
only and $25 with the Blue & Gold lunch. Cost is $10 for the
show only and $20 with the Blue and Gold lunch for UD
faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens, and $6 for the
show only and $18 with the Blue and Gold lunch for students
and children 5-11. For children under 5, tickets are $6 for
the show only and $11 with the Blue and Gold lunch.
Tickets can be purchased in person at the box offices
at the Bob Carpenter Center, Trabant University Center or

In addition to its public performance, the dance troupe
also will present a children's workshop at 4 p.m. and a
dance demonstration at 7:30 p.m., both on Friday, March 7,
at the Christina Cultural Arts Center.
There also will be dance workshops at 10 a.m. and noon,
and a choreography workshop at 1:30 p.m., all on Saturday,
March 8, at the arts center; and master classes at 10 a.m.
and noon on Saturday, March 8, at UD.
The programs and the performance are made possible by a
grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts' Special
Ventures Program.
