Festivities planned for Perkins Student Center

March Madness reigns in the newly renovated Perkins
Student Center, where its recent reopening will be
celebrated with a week-long series of activities.
Events are scheduled from March 15-22 in the Hen Zone,
on the lower level of the Perkins Student Center. All are
open to the public.
The Hen Zone is a combination sports center and cabaret
theatre (the Bacchus Theatre). The sports side offers three,
giant-screen televisions and stereo surround sound with all
the hottest basketball action of the season, along with
billiards, Ping Pong, fooseball and more. The adjoining
cabaret offers music from local bands, comedy, theatre and a
variety of events.
The celebrations begin on Friday, March 14, when WVUD-
FM will sponsor a concert as part of its annual radiothon
fundraising drive. The concert, starting at 8 p.m. in the
Bacchus Theatre, will feature a hand-picked selection of
local bands, covering a wide range of music from rap to jazz
to alternative. Admission ranges from $3 to $5.
Radiothon continues on Saturday, March 15, Friday,
March 21 and Saturday, March 22, with concerts featuring
more local bands and dancing in Bacchus Theatre. Call WVUD
at 831-2701 for specific bands and their playing times.
On Sunday, March 16, members of the campus and
community are invited to join members of E-52 Student
Theatre for Studio 52, an ongoing open exploration of the
relationship between work and play in the arts. Scheduled in
the Bacchus Theatre from 2-5 p.m., the event will allow
participants to work on monologues or scenes, join in
improvisational exercises, read the work of new playwrights
or just watch and enjoy.
On Monday, March 17, the Hen Zone will celebrate St.
Patrick's Day with "Play on the Green for No Green!"
offering free billiards all day and night. Giveaways and
other specials also will be included.
On Tuesday, March 18, Just Kidding, a comedy improv
troupe from Wilmington's City Theatre Company, will perform
in Bacchus.
Doors open at 8 p.m., and the free event starts at 8:30
p.m. The troupe, known for its laughs and theatrical
wizardry, has been seen at O'Friels Irish Pub and throughout
the tri-state area.
The Pumpernickel Players, fresh from a nine-day East
Coast tour, will perform in the Hen Zone, offering their own
brand of comedy improvisation which includes audience
participation, on Wednesday, March 19. Members of the group
have worked with Comedysportz and with Second City in
Chicago. The group headlined at the Pittsburgh Improvathon
24-hour festival and served as host for the Great Bake Off
Improvisational Festival in 1997. Doors open at 8 p.m., and
the free performance starts at 8:30 p.m.
On Thursday, March 20, a local band, Joy Poppers, will
mark its first performance in Bacchus Theatre. Doors open at
8 p.m., and the free show starts at 8:30 p.m. The Joy
Poppers is one of the University community's favorite bands.
