Lectures on race and culture
The annual "Race, Ethnicity and Culture" lecture series
this spring began Feb. 19, and talks will continue from
12:20-1:10 p.m., Wednesdays, through May 21. Those attending
are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.
With one exception, all talks will be held in Rooms 209-
211 of the Trabant University Center. The March 26 talk will
be in Room 110 of Memorial Hall.
The talks are free and open to the public or can be taken
as a one-credit, pass-fail course.
Speaking Feb. 26 will be James Curtis, Winterthur
Program, who will discuss "In Search of the Primitive: Race
and Realism in Documentary Photography During the Great
Depression."
Judith Y. Gibson, affirmative action and multicultural
programs, will speak March 5 on "Mighty Oaks: Five Prominent
Black Educators."
On March 12, Devonna Williams of Goeins-Williams
Consultants and Trainers will discuss "Beyond Barriers:
Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities."
Susan Miller, sociology, will speak March 19 on "Race,
Class, Gender and Criminal Justice Policy Issues."
Nancy Signorielli, communication, will talk about the
"Depiction of Women and Minorities in the Media" on March
26.
The series resumes after spring break on April 9, when
Anna White, anthropology undergraduate, will discuss "Gender
and Fertility Decision-Making in Senegal."
Beth Bonniewell Haslett, women's studies, will speak on
April 16 on "Microinequalities: The Scaffolding of Subtle
Discrimination."
Speaking on April 23 will be Peter Feng, English, who
will address "Japanese Americans and World War II: The
Legacy of Internment in the United States."
On April 30, Niki Benokraitis, sociology, University of
Maryland, Baltimore County, will discuss "Race, Gender and
Cultural Issues in Family Policy."
Bethany Hall-Long, nursing, will speak on May 7 on
"Multicultural Health Issues for Minorities and Women."
A final speaker for May 14 is yet to be announced, and
the course will conclude with an overview and reflections on
May 21.
