Admissions chief accepts new position in Texas
Bruce Walker, associate provost for admissions and student
financial aid at the University, has been named director of the
Office of Admissions at the University of Texas at Austin.
Known as a leader in the field of recruiting and enrollment,
Walker also will serve as an associate vice president and will be
the first admissions director at UT Austin charged with
implementing a new comprehensive admissions policy. Walker, who
came to Delaware 11 years ago, will assume his new post Oct. 1.
John Cavanaugh, interim associate provost for graduate
studies at UD, will also become interim associate provost for
admissions and student financial aid.
In announcing the transition, Provost Mel Schiavelli said,
"We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere
good wishes for much success and happiness to Bruce as he leaves
us for new challenges in Texas. Bruce has served the University
well for the last 11 years, and for that we are truly grateful.
We all send him our congratulations and thanks."
Under Walker's leadership, the UD Financial Aid Office
became a model of service to students. Teams of administrators
from more than 100 institutions visited the school in the past
three years to study the Student Services Building, a
technologically sophisticated, one-stop shopping place for
student administrative needs. Also this year, UD was one of the
first universities to have a functioning admission application on
the World Wide Web.
The new policy Walker will administer in Texas is designed
to maintain the school's enrollment cap of approximately 48,000
and preserve a high level of academic life and support systems.
It will affect applicants seeking admission beginning in the
summer of 1997.
In discussing his decision, Walker said, "The past 11 years
have been full of some wonderful times, both personally and
professionally. I am privileged to have had a bright, hard-
working staff and to have had the support of the deans and
faculty who gave so freely of their time to help make our efforts
successful.
"Though I would like to think that my leadership helped keep
things on track, I know that these are the people who deserve
much praise for the accomplishments of the past 11 years. These
are also the people who will support John Cavanaugh for this year
and the new associate provost following John.
"Delaware is a special place and this was a special time in
my life and that of my family," he said.
"My new position at the University of Texas at Austin
presents a world of opportunity as they are in the midst of a
complete change in their admission requirements and processes
with a desire to have the faculty more involved. I am very much
looking forward to helping them accomplish their goals.
"Of course, this is also 'going home' for us, and Sharon and
I are looking forward to being close to family. Of course, it is
tough leaving our son, Shawn, behind, but we are pleased that he
will be at Delaware as a freshman this year because this will
give us a reason to come back for Parents' Day."
Walker received his bachelor's degree from Southwestern
College, his master's degree from Texas Christian University and
his doctorate from North Texas State University. Before coming to
Delaware, he was affiliated with the Southwestern Regional Office
of the College Board in Austin for eight years.
