AmeriCorps mentor project seeking student participants
First State Mentor Corps, a new AmeriCorps National Service
Project, designed to foster academic success and self-esteem in
school children, is looking for 21 UD students to participate in
a mentoring program with local public schools.
Lisa Diller, coordinator of the recently opened office in
Alison Hall, and Suzanne Woollans, AmeriCorps member for New
Castle County, will be holding four informational sessions during
the next two weeks to find freshmen and sophomores interested in
working with elementary and middle school students.
Program participants are paid $125 a month and, after
completion of 900 service hours, earn a $2,363 educational award
that can be used to pay tuition or as credit against student
loans.
Meetings will be held in Room 202 of Alison Hall East from 6-
7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Monday, Feb. 17; from 12:15-1:15
p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, and from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday,
Feb. 20.
First State Mentor Corps supports the governor's initiative
to place 10,000 mentors in Delaware's public schools. The
University is coordinating the effort through the new College of
Human Resources, Education and Public Policy. It is funded
through the Delaware Commission on National and Community
Service, in cooperation with UD. Equal numbers of students are
being recruited at Delaware State University in Dover and at the
Owens campus of Delaware Technical and Community College in
Georgetown to make this a statewide effort.
