On campus: Programs celebrate National Engineers Week
Vincent Carbo, executive vice president of Hercules Inc.,
will speak on "Specialty Chemicals from Natural Products" from 4-
5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Mitchell Hall, at the second Dean's
Technological Innovation Symposium, which is being presented in
conjunction with the University's celebration of National
Engineers Week. The program is free and open to the public.
At Hercules, Carbo is responsible for worldwide technology
and the paper technology and fibers businesses. He is an advisory
member of the board of directors and a member of the Hercules
Management Committee. He also is a member of the Engineering
Outreach Executive Council for the UD College of Engineering.
Carbo received his bachelor's degree from Manhattan College
in 1965 and his doctorate in chemical engineering from Princeton
University in 1969. He joined Hercules Research Center that same
year and became director of strategy for the Elastomer &
Specialty Chemicals in 1982. Since then he has served as director
of Project Office, Research and Development; vice president of
fibers business; vice president of film business; president of
Hercules Advanced Materials & Systems Co.; and president of
Hercules Food and Functional Products Co.
Hercules manufactures chemical specialty products for a
variety of markets worldwide. The corporation concentrates on
value-added, high-performance products where it has a market or
technology advantage. Hercules employs 7,300 persons and operates
45 manufacturing plants around the world.
Other activities planned at UD for National Engineers Week
include
* A presentation on "Research and Opportunities at IBM"
for upperclass students in electrical and computer
engineering and computer sciences, scheduled from 3-4 p.m.,
Monday, Feb. 17 in 204 Evans Hall;
* The "Order of the Engineering Ring Ceremony," with
guest speaker Harry W. Shenton III, civil and environmental
engineering, open to graduating seniors and graduate
students, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, in
Mitchell Hall; and
* A program, "Explore Engineering Day," offered by the
Society of Women Engineers and open to high school students
by invitation, from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20,
beginning in 140 DuPont Hall.
The week of festivities concludes on Thursday, Feb. 20, when
the Delaware Council of Engineering Societies presents the
"Delaware's Engineers Week Banquet," beginning at 6:30 p.m. in
the Crystal Ballroom of the DuPont Country Club. Keynote speaker
will be Constantine Papadakis, president of Drexel University.
Tickets at $30 for the general public and $15 for students.
