Weigh-to-Go program a success
The recent Weigh-to-Go program involved 47 employee
participants, who were given "survival kits" filled with tips on
how to handle the pressures related to weight gain during the
Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza and New Year's holiday
events.
During these times, participants were encouraged to maintain
their weight by using information related to healthy eating,
handling stress and tips on social eating.
Participants were weighed the week before Thanksgiving and
the week after the beginning of the New Year. An allowance of two
pounds either way was part of their goal, and 43 of the 47
employees attended the post-holiday weigh-in.
Of these, 39 were able to maintain their pre-holiday weight.
According to Marianne Carter, dietitian and coordinator, the
results were extremely positive.
"I was impressed with the overall success rate," she said.
"On the average, individuals gain 5 to 8 pounds during this
season. These employees did an outstanding job, and some even
managed to lose weight."
Successful participants were entered into a prize drawing. A
free TCBY dessert coupon was given to Ruth Hallett research
office; Linda Hickman, graduate studies; Lorena Hobart and Patti
Gerhart, marine studies; and Norma Gaines, human resources.
Darlene Blessing, engineering, won a year's subscription to
the nutrition newsletter Smart EatingIn the First State. An
Employee Wellness t-shirt was won by Martha Buell, individual and
family studies; Peg Patton, investments office; and Karen Kral,
user services.
