Electronic Library Lunch series to offer eight new programs
The University Library's spring electronic lunch series will
include eight, brown-bag demonstration sessions, all highlighting
electronic resources available on the World Wide Web.
The sessions are open to all members of the University
community.
Reservations are not necessary, and participants may bring
lunch. All programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m.,
Thursdays, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room of the Morris
Library. Members of the library staff will serve as demonstration
hosts.
Feb. 27-"RealAudio and VDOLive: Real-time Audio and Video
over the Internet." These technologies provide computer access
to real-time audio and video without the need for lengthy, time-
consuming downloads. Information on how to download and use the
two systems will be discussed. Host: Madeleine Masso, library
systems.
March 6-"A Person's Best Friend: Pet Information on the
Web." Explore interesting sites on pet information, including
health issues, breeding, animal shows and magazines. While
mainly focused on cats and dogs, the session also will include
other animals.
Host: Erin Daix, reference.
March 13-"Windsor Chairs and Pewter Plates: Web Sources
about Early-American Antiques." Web sites for those interested
in Early-American furniture and decorative arts.
Host: Sandra Millard, public services.
March 20-"Virtual Gardens: Gardens and Gardening on the
Web." Explore sites on the World Wide Web for horticultural
information, including gardening literature, plant sources,
botanical and private gardens and other specialized sites.
Host: Patricia Arnott, reference.
April 10-"The Greening of the Internet." Explore the web
and become more environmentally aware. Issues to be covered
include becoming involved and finding information about the
local environment.
Host: Shannon Burchard, acquisitions.
April 17-"Surfing for Gold: Grant and Scholarship
Information on the Web." Find out how to use the web to
identify potential sources for grants and scholarships.
Host: Carol A. Rudisell, referenc.
April 24-"Rooting Around the Web: Internet Resources for
Family History." The Internet is burgeoning with sites of
interest to those tracing their family histories, including
beginners' guides, mailing lists, newsgroups and chat rooms,
searchable genealogical databases, personal family pages,
genealogical and historical societies and commercial services.
This workshop will explore some of the more impressive sites
and discuss what is and is not possible to find online.

May 1-"The Virtual Workplace: Human Resources Information
on the Web." A look at information related to current issues in
the workplace. Explore the resources on the web useful for
professional and career development and ways in which
organizations are using the Internet as a communication tool.
Host: Julie Brewer, administrative services.
