In praise of fitness

Three mornings each week, Joseph L. FitzPatrick, instructor
in educational studies for seven years, can be found working out
in the Employee Fitness Center in the Carpenter Sports Building.
FitzPatrick's Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays begin with
stretches and workouts from 7 to 9 a.m.
The 61 year old speaks enthusiastically of his experiences
at the employee center. He talks of stamina, well being, mental
clarity, weight control and an overall feeling of wellness. "I
simply love the fitness center," FitzPatrick said. "University
employees are fortunate to have such a facility and opportunity."
FitzPatrick came to the University Fitness Center by way of
the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at the Medical Center of
Delaware (MCD). He began his exercise routines at the Medical
Center last February, after open heart surgery to replace a
dysfunctional mitral valve, the result of childhood rheumatic
fever.
After five months of rehabilitation at the medical center,
FitzPatrick learned of the University's program from graduates
and students who work or intern at the MCD. When classes resumed
in September, FitzPatrick headed for the Carpenter Sports
Building center.
I was impressed by the facility, the staff and the
amenities," he said. The admission procedures and the program
development were first rate. The staff is
wonderful-knowledgeable, concerned and dedicated. All for $25
Wellness Dollars!"
His cardiologist was enthusiastically supportive of his
continued rehabilitation/fitness regime.
From the very beginning," FitzPatrick said, "Phyllis Whaler,
wellness program coordinator, has monitored my progress.
Periodically, we have meetings to reexamine my goals and
exercises program. Phyllis is watchful that I don't overdo my
exercises."
He added that the staff monitors his heart rate, blood
pressure and weight. "These procedures themselves provide
incentive for me to stay on track," he added.
Other employees who work out at the center also provide
support and incentive, FitzPatrick said. "Even at 7 a.m.,
conversation begins in the locker room and continues into the
gym. University happenings, sports and seemingly every topic
possible are explored by the fitness folks."
FitzPatrick said he even has a locker, workout clothing and
linen service, for a few extra Wellness dollars.
