Vice provost named to national EPA committee
Costel Denson, vice provost for research, has been appointed
chairperson of the executive committee of the recently created
Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) for the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA).
Authorized by the U.S. Congress under the Federal Advisory
Committee Act, BOSC has been established to counsel the Office of
Research and Development in EPA on its operation.
"Prior to this time, EPA research and development has not
been involved in peer review to any large extent, and BOSC has
been formed to address this issue," Denson said. "The BOSC
executive committee, consisting of 15 well-known experts on
different environmental issues, will have significant impact on
environmental research and development. We will be involved in
peer review of programs, processes, management practices, human
resources, laboratories and new research directions."
By law, the meetings are open to the public, and there is an
opportunity for public input from concerned persons and
organizations.
"This is a very significant effort and an important one,
considering today's heavy emphasis on environmental issues
nationwide," Denson said.
