Scott Sabol named director of transportation institute

Scott Sabol has been appointed the first permanent director
of the Delaware Transportation Institute (DTI), an on-campus
cooperative venture in transportation research established in
1993 by the University and the Delaware Department of
Transportation (DelDOT).
With the appointment, DTI is ready to expand its program and
increase its contributions to the field of transportation by
providing research, development and technology transfer in the
area of local, regional and national transportation needs.
"We want to focus on how we can improve the movement of
goods, people and ideas and produce results that are practical
and can be implemented," Sabol said. "We also want to provide
information to the state on both short- and long-term technology
needs.
"Transportation used to be considered a branch of civil
engineering, but now, because the problems are not as simple or
as focused as they used to be, the field requires an
interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach involving
political science, economics, mechanical engineering, urban
planning and other disciplines," he said.
Sabol served as a research manager at the Transportation
Research Board of the National Research Council, where he was
involved in transportation planning, design, materials and
economics. Previously, he was an engineer specializing in bridge-
and structures-related research with the Pennsylvania
Transportation Institute at Pennsylvania State University.
Sabol holds bachelor of arts and bachelor of engineering
degrees from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in civil
and structural engineering from Pennsylvania State University.
Previously, DTI has operated under interim directors John T.
Davis, who had served as director of highways for DelDOT; Jerome
Lewis, urban affairs and public policy; and Ardeshir Faghri,
civil and environmental engineering.
