Reorganization of colleges receives trustees' approval

     The reorganization of five University colleges into two new
colleges was officially approved by the Board of Trustees
Tuesday, Dec. 17, at its semiannual meeting in the Trabant
University Center.
     Under the new organization, which was approved by the
Faculty Senate in November:

       the College of Physical Education, Athletics and
  Recreation and the College of Nursing will merge to form the
  College of Health and Nursing Sciences, including the
  departments of Medical Technology; Nutrition and Dietetics;
  and Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation; and the
  Biomechanics and Movement Science Program; and

       the College of Education, the College of Human Resources
  and the College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy will merge
  to form a new college, temporarily called the College of Human
  Resources, Education and Public Policy, and including the
  departments of Individual and Family Studies; Textiles, Design
  and Consumer Economics; Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional
  Management; Educational Development; and Educational Studies,
  and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

     The reorganization will be effective July 1.

     In other activity, the trustees approved resolutions

       establishing the Edward C. Davis Professorship Fund as an
  endowment to support professorships in the Department of Civil
  Engineering;
       confirming the F.Y. 1998 capital funds request to the
  state;
       authorizing the contract with Follett College Stories to
  manage the University Bookstore; and
       authorizing the president to confer degrees at Winter
  Commencement Jan. 4.

     Also at the meeting, University President David P. Roselle
presented an overview of financial aid issues.
     In board business, trustee R.R.M. Carpenter III was 
re-elected to a six-year term, and a resolution was passed saluting
Rachel E. Grier, trustee from 1978 to 1996, for her service to
the board and the University.
