Prof. honored by state SAR
Raymond Wolters, Thomas Muncy Keith Professor of History,
recently received the prestigious Silver Good Citizenship Medal
from the Delaware Society of the Sons of the American Revolution
(SAR), in recognition of his contributions to American history,
his dedicated career in teaching young Americans and his
contributions to American black history and the civil rights
movement.
Wolters was recognized, in particular, for his efforts last
summer in teaching a graduate seminar for Delaware high school
social studies teachers that examined the theme of "politically
correctness" in recently released national history standards.
Wolters also is the author of four scholarly books,
including the award-winning The Burden of Brown: Thirty Years of
School Desegregation, as well as numerous articles, essays and
book reviews. He has been at UD since 1965.
The Silver Good Citizenship Medal is the highest award the
State SAR Society can give. The SAR is a nonpartisan,
educational, historic and patriotic organization open to anyone
who can show lineal descent from someone who helped in the cause
of the American Revolution.
Wolters was educated at Stanford University and the
University of California at Berkeley.
