Successful recruitment
When the Corona-Morco Unified School District, one of the
largest in California, needed to hire new teachers by 1997
because of the state's recently passed Class Size Reduction Act,
district representatives headed for Delaware, according to Cindy
Holland, career services, who coordinates educational placement.
Recruiters from the district have been participating in
Project Search, a job fair for teacher candidates, for most of
the event's 18 years, Holland said. The event is sponsored by the
Career Services Center and the University Council on Teacher
Education.
Because of their strong interest in the University's
elementary teacher education program and the high quality of the
teachers they have hired from Delaware, four district
representatives visited the Delaware campus and only two other
institutions on their special recruitment trip to the East in
October.
After two days of interviews, 14 UD seniors, all of whom are
graduating in January, were offered contracts, and nine accepted
and will begin employment Jan. 29.
It's a win/win situation, with the district's
representatives saying that the trip was well worth the
investment and with the students excited and pleased to be
offered jobs and to begin their teaching careers on the West
Coast, Holland said.
