Prof. named head of legal studies
Juliet Dee, associate professor of communication, has been
appointed to a two-year term as director of the Legal Studies
Program in the College of Arts and Science.
Dee succeeds Valerie Hans, sociology and criminal justice,
who has been awarded a Center for Advanced Study Fellowship for
1996-97.
A specialist in communications and the law, Dee is coauthor
of Mass Communication Law in a Nutshell, a textbook featuring
numerous articles on First Amendment issues. She also has
published a number of research articles regarding media
liability, rock and rap music censorship and attempts to censor
art created with government funding agencies such as the National
Endowment for the Arts.
Dee, who teaches "Legal Issues of the Mass Media," said she
finds media law fascinating, because "the rules of the game are
changing so fast."
Although the minor is a good choice for any students
interested in law as a career, Dee said, legal studies is not a
pre-law program.
Founded in 1989, the Legal Studies Program was approved as a
minor in 1991. The program provides students with an
interdisciplinary approach to the study of law. Students may
choose from among more than 30 courses in such disciplines as
political science and international relations, accounting,
communication, criminal justice, economics, history, philosophy,
psychology, sociology and women's studies.
Students must complete "Introduction to Law" and
"Introduction to Legal Studies," both of which give historical
and philosophical overviews of law. Also required is
participation in a "Senior Seminar," which involves a research
paper.
