Faculty, student art in exhibition

     The Department of Art continues its fall exhibition schedule
with several events in November and December.
     Through Sunday, Nov. 24, the "Visual Communications 1976 &
1986 Alumni Exhibition" is on view at the Department of Art
Gallery in Recitation Hall.
     Through Wednesday, Dec. 11, University art faculty are
showcasing their recent works in the "Department of Art Annual
Faculty Exhibition" at the University Gallery in Old College. The
show features the works of art professors Rosemary Lane, Larry
Holmes, Victor Spinski, Stephen Tanis and John Weiss.
     A gallery talk and brown-bag lunch will be held by Holmes
and Weiss from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
     From Friday, Dec. 6, to Sunday, Dec. 8, and from Friday,
Dec. 13, to Sunday, Dec. 15, senior art students will participate
in the "Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Exhibitions" at the
Department of Art Gallery in Recitation Hall. Opening receptions
will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13.
     All exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the
public.

Voices harmonize in AIDS benefit

     Performances by several University a cappella groups will
highlight the annual AIDS Benefit, to be held from 7-9 p.m.,
Monday, Dec. 2, in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant
University Center.
     Sponsored by the Office of Residence Life, the benefit will
feature performances by the D-Sharps, the Deltones, the Y
Chromes, the Golden Blues and other local talent. The event will
be hosted by the Not Quite Ready for Bed Players, a University
peer organization that educates students on sexuality and health
issues through short plays and dialogue. The groups will perform
skits during the benefit.
     Admission is free. Refreshments and T-shirts will be sold to
benefit AIDS Delaware, a local agency that assists individuals
and their loved ones who are HIV-positive or living with AIDS.

Visiting lecturer in Trabant tonight

     John A. McCarthy, professor of German and comparative
literature at Vanderbuilt University, will lecture "On Reading
and Writing in an Age of Consumerism" at 7:30, tonight, in Room
209-211, Trabant University Center. A reception will follow the
free, public program.
     McCarthy, known as a lively and engaging speaker, is the
21st public lecturer in the Distinguished Scholars Series
sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and
Literatures.


Museum director to speak Nov. 24

     Michael Berenbaum, director of the U.S. Holocaust Research
Institute of the Holocaust Memorial Museum, will speak on
"Holocaust and Contemporary American Consciousness: Why Remember
the Past? Why Teach About It?"
     The free public lecture will be presented at 2:30 p.m.,
Sunday, Nov. 24, in Arsht Hall on the Wilmington campus.
     Berenbaum, who served as project director during the
planning and building of the Holocaust Museum, is currently Hyman
Goldman Adjunct Professor of Theology at Georgetown University.
He is the author of 10 books and scores of scholarly articles
about the Holocaust.
     After the lecture, and as part of a concurrent Holocaust
Education Workshop for Teachers, there will be a showing of the
Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning documentary One Survivor
Remembers, which Berenbaum coproduced with Home Box Office.
     The lecture is cosponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies
at the University and the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education
Center of the Jewish Federation of Delaware.


Gospel Choir in Pearson Nov. 24

     The University of Delaware Gospel Choir will present its
annual fall concert at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, in Pearson
Hall Auditorium.
     The theme of the program is to worship through song and
dance.
     An offering will be accepted.

Dance lessons to begin in December

     The UD Ballroom Dance Club is offering three, 10-week
sessions of beginning dance lessons from 8-9 p.m., beginning
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, Dec. 1, 3 and 5. Intermediate
classes will be taught from 7-8 p.m., Thursdays, beginning Dec.
5.
     Cost is $25 for full-time students and $50 for others.
Private instruction is available for $20 an hour.

     The Department of Music is offering a number of free, public
concerts in early December in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy
E. du Pont Music Building:
       The UD Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Tom Palmer,
  at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3,
       Gamelan Lake of the Silver Bear, directed by Michael
  Zinn, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 4,
       The Choral Union, under the direction of Larry Hoenig, at
  8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 and
       The University Singers, under the direction of Ruth
  Oatman, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7.
