UD construction on the web
Sidewalk superintendents can take the traditional route to
see the latest building progress by walking by two major
construction sites on campus- Gore Hall and MBNA America Hall-or
they can simply check things out on the World Wide Web.
With the aid of video cameras- mounted across from the
construction sites-a picture of the construction in progress is
updated three times a minute.
The Gore Hall classroom building is scheduled to be
completed in early 1998. The new building located on the Mall
between Mitchell Hall and Sharp Laboratory, will contain 25
classrooms, varying in size from 25-seat seminar rooms to 80-seat
case study rooms. The building will incorporate the latest in
instructional technology.
The building is a gift to the University, one of the most
significant contributions in the University's history, given by
alumnus and trustee Robert W. Gore, alumna Sarah I. Gore and
Genevieve W. Gore. It is the first addition to the tree-lined
heart of the campus since H. Rodney Sharp Laboratory was built in
1961-62.
MBNA America Hall, at the corner of Orchard Road and Amstel
Avenue, is a major expansion of the College of Business and
Economics, and is scheduled to be completed next summer.
The new building will contain office space for faculty,
academic centers, college administrative offices, four case study
classrooms and lounge facilities. The building's centerpiece will
be a three-story, glass-walled atrium with skylights. This
project also includes the renovation of Purnell Hall office and
classroom areas.
State funding for the $15 million project totals $11
million, with the balance provided by private gifts, among them
$2.5 million from MBNA America and $1 million from benefactor
Chaplin Tyler of Hockessin. Other significant contributions
include $150,000 from J.P. Morgan & Co., $100,000 from Wilmington
Trust Co. and $50,000 from PNC Bank.
