Gov. proclaims Nov. 17-23 as geography week in Delaware

The state of Delaware is marking Geography Awareness Week
through Nov. 23. At a Delaware Geographic Alliance awareness
workshop, held Oct. 16 at Glasgow High School, Delaware Gov.
Thomas R. Carper, Delaware '75 MBA, signed a proclamation
designating the special recognition in the First State.
This year's theme, "Geography: Exploring a World of
Habitats, Seeing a World of Difference," emphasizes habitat
diversity, the role it plays in our lives and the ways we affect
such diversity.
The Delaware Geographic Alliance was founded in 1988 at the
University by Peter Rees, geography, and Lewis Huffman, state
Department of Public Instruction.
The National Geographic Society Education Foundation and the
Delaware Department of Public Instruction provide major alliance
funding. There also are contributions from local organizations
and businesses.
The alliance is interested in obtaining sufficient funding
to support a permanent office, achieving statewide implementation
of the Delaware geography standards, establishing a high school
geography requirement course for graduation and establishing a
geography teacher mentoring program.
