'Calliope' to premiere Nov. 20

More than 350 musicians will take the stage of Mitchell Hall
on Wednesday, Nov. 20, when the Department of Music presents what
promises to be the start of a new music tradition at Delaware.
From the opening fanfare of trumpets to the rousing finale
by the UD Marching Band, the evening, entitled Calliope, will be
a fast-paced extravaganza featuring all the student ensembles in
the Department of Music, covering everything from a Spanish
guitar trio to the sounds of jazz, the wind ensemble, orchestra,
choirs, percussion ensemble and more.
As the name "Calliope" implies, it will be an evening of
high energy fun reminiscent of a circus atmosphere. The sound and
light spectacle showcasing UD's finest young musicians begins at
8 p.m. and will benefit the Department of Music Scholarship Fund.
"This is the largest number of students we've ever featured
in one concert. Every UD student performing group will be doing
something," Heidi Sarver, assistant professor of music and
director of the marching band and of Calliope, said.
"It's a variety showcase with very accessible music, music
that is familiar to general audiences," Sarver said. "We hope
people will see Calliope and say, 'Hey! I like that group. I
think I'll come to more of their performances.'"
The program will make use of all performing space in
Mitchell Hall. Musicians will be heard from the stage, balcony,
aisles and sides of the room, Elaine Brenchley, administrative
coordinator in music, said.
Admission to Calliope is $15 for the general public, $10 for
UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $5 for
students. To request a ticket order form, call the Department of
Music at 831-2577. Tickets also are available at box offices at
