Experts set for 3 econ seminars
Three prominent speakers, all authorities in their fields,
will be featured in the Department of Economics' free, public
weekly seminar series scheduled this month.
The speakers are Chancellor William T. Allen, Court of
Chancery, State of Delaware; Stephen Ross, Sterling Professor
Economics and Finance at the Yale School of Management; and
George Akerlof, a professor at the University of California at
Berkeley and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Allen will speak on "Economics and Moralism in Corporation
Law," from 5-6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, in 205 Kirkbride Hall.
A national authority on law and economics and corporate
governance, Allen has written more than 500 judicial opinions
during his tenure since 1985 as chief judge of the Court of
Chancery, which exercises jurisdiction over trust, real property,
guardianships, civil rights and a wide variety of commercial
litigation. A graduate of New York University, he received a J.D.
degree from the University of Texas.
Ross will speak on "Agency Relations in Finance," from 3:30-
5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, in 118 Purnell Hall.
A widely published author in finance and economics, Ross is
best known as the inventor of the Arbitrage Pricing Theory. His
early work involved principal-agent models. He also serves as
cochairperson of Roll & Ross Asset Management Corp., which uses
the technology he has helped to develop to oversee the management
of over $6 billion in equity investments worldwide. He is a
graduate of California Institute of Technology and holds a
doctorate from Harvard.
Akerlof will speak on "Macroeconomics of Low Inflation,"
from 3:30-5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in 118 Purnell Hall.
A graduate of Yale University with a doctorate from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has published
extensively and is known for his frequently cited article, "The
Market for 'Lemons,' Quality Uncertainty and the Market
Mechanism," which appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Economics.
A senior adviser for the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity,
Akerlof serves as vice president of the American Economic
Association.
