Trash recycled into art to go on display Nov. 17

Trash and Other Treasures," an upcoming exhibit in the
Esther Shallcross Marshall Gallery at the Center for the Creative
Arts in Yorklyn, will feature the work of two UD faculty-Jane
Matranga and Karen Schaeffer, both textiles, design and consumer
economics.
An opening reception will be held from 2-5 p.m., Sunday,
Nov. 17, and the exhibit will run through Dec. 14.
The show will feature both collaborative works and
individual pieces by Matranga and Schaeffer. Both artists have
been nationally and internationally recognized and were invited
to include pieces on a world tour sponsored by the United States
Information Agency.
That touring exhibit, "Recycle, Reuse, Recreate," will
feature one-of-a-kind artwork fashioned from recycled materials.
"Empress of Neoprene" and "Feather Your Nest" were selected
for the tour. "Mojha Yeti" and "Urban Camouflage" appear in the
catalog.
"Jade Dragon," a collaborative effort, will be featured at
the Yorklyn show. Photographs of the touring pieces also will be
included.
Matranga's work focuses on representational painting with
dyes on fabric. "Urban Camouflage" is a woman's coat painted to
resemble a graffiti-covered brick wall. Her other works in the
show include "Midwest Memories," "Trashcans: Monday Morning #4,"
"Velvet Portraits" and"Poisson Rouge."
Schaeffer's approach to the work is through the use of
unusual materials in garments. "Mojha Yeti" is a coat and hat
ensemble that looks like curly lamb but is made from sock rounds.
Her other pieces in the show include "Calligraphic Cleopatra,"
"Copper Coolie," "Golden Net" and "Copper Reflections."
