Research on Women series to feature faculty speakers
The University's annual Research on Women fall lecture series
features a series of presentations open to the public. The series
also may be taken for a one-credit pass/fail course.
The lectures are scheduled from 12:20-1:10 p.m., Wednesdays, in
Room 007 of the Willard Hall Education Building.
The first lecture is scheduled for Sept. 11, when Anne Boylan,
history, will present "Over the Hill to the Poorhouse: Welfare Reform
in America in Historical Perspective."
On Sept. 18, Jan Davidson, graduate teaching assistant in
history, will present "The Goosing of Violet Nye: White Women and
Respectability on the Pennsylvania Railroad in World War I."
Saul Hoffman, economics, will present "Welfare Reform: Where Are
We Heading?" on Sept. 25.
On Oct. 2, Heather Dell, of Duke University, will present "Rights
for Sex Workers in India."
Scheduled for Oct. 9 is "Childbirth as Empowerment: The
Experience of a Free-Standing Birth Center," presented by Kathleen
Turkel, women's studies.
Michele Marrese, history, will present "Women, Poverty and Power
in Imperial Russia" on Oct. 23.
On Oct. 30, Marian Palley, political science and international
relations, will speak on "Assessing the Gender Gap."
Gerald Turkel, sociology, will speak on "Employment Issues Facing
Women in Academia" on Nov. 6.
Ronet Bachman, criminal justice, will speak on Nov. 13, with
topic still to be announced.
"A Woman's Worth: Nazi Ideology and Legal and Physical Violence
Against Women" is to topic of William Thomas, history, on Nov. 20.
Continuing the series after the Thanksgiving holiday is Kathleen
Thierren, English, speaking on "You Discuss the Contradictions in the
Rules: Feminist Discourse and the Mass-Market Romance Novel."
On Dec. 11, the series concludes with Susan Shoemaker, history,
discussing "Suitable for Females But Only For the Duration: British
Munitions Workers' Football Teams in World War I."
