United Way: Making it work - Liane Sorenson
For the past several years, I have volunteered for the Delaware
Division of the American Cancer Society. In particular, I've been
involved with breast cancer awareness activities, such as serving on
the Breast Cancer Consortium, working on the Delawareans for Breast
Cancer Awareness Rally or being a sponsor of the Mini-Summit on Breast
Cancer. We sponsor activities and events designed to get the public
involved and aware of issues involving breast cancer.
"The consortium consists of a diverse group of people- health
care providers, survivors of breast cancer and people interested in
women's issues. I like to be involved in something where you can make
a difference, and cancer in Delaware is a significant issue. We have
one of the highest mortality rates in the country. We've found that
this is not because of a higher number of cases, but because the
cancer is often detected in its later stages.
"With breast cancer, we can really make a difference through
educational efforts. As director of women's affairs at the University,
women's health is one of the issues I'm concerned with. For a number
of years, we have tried to do appropriate programming in October as
part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So, my volunteer work
is partly an outgrowth of my professional work here at the
University."
