Sorority marks 20th year at UD
Delta Sigma Theta, the first African-American sorority at the
University of Delaware, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on
Parents Weekend, Oct. 27-29.
The sorority, founded in 1913 at Howard University, has scheduled
several events to mark the occasion, according to president Stacy
Jackson, a senior, civil engineering major. Alumnae will be welcomed
back Friday evening. On Saturday, a tailgate is scheduled before the
football game for sorority members, alumnae, families and friends.
On Saturday afternoon, a Health Fair will be set up at the Center
for Black Culture for parents and students, with free blood pressure
screening and information on health topics.
The high point of the celebration will be a Flashback Party
scheduled from 10 p.m.-2 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 28 at Pearson Hall
gymnasium. Guests are asked to dress in fashions from the '70s.
Admission is $3 before 11 p.m. and $4 afterward.
Festivities will conclude with a non-denominational service at 11
a.m., Sunday in the Ewing Room of the Student Center.
Delta Sigma Theta is active in several service projects. Members
act as tutors and mentors for students, grades 9-12, who have college
potential, through the Delaware Futures Program and tutor children of
all ages at Mt. Zion Church in Newark. The sorority also holds an
annual Easter party at Christiana Hospital for children and
participates in charitable food and clothing drives.
