Museum lecture in Old College

     Lonnie Bunch, assistant director for curatorial affairs of the
National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution
since 1991, will give a free lecture on "Exhibit Controversy in the
Age of Uncertainty" in the Museum Studies Program fall forum lecture
series at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, in 202 Old College. The event is
cosponsored by the Department of History and the Black American
Studies Program.
     Previously, Bunch served as curator in the museum's division of
political history and also was senior curator of history of the
California Afro-American Museum.
     He has been curator for several exhibitions, including "The Black
Olympians: The Afro-American in the Olympic Games," "Seeing Is
Believing: The Photography of the Civil Rights Movement" and the
upcoming "Land of Promise: America in the 19th Century."
     Bunch has published extensively in his field, including The Black
Olympians: The Afro-American in the Olympic Games, 1904-1984, Black
Angelenos: The Afro-American in Los Angeles, 1850-1950 and Visions
Toward Tomorrow: The History of the East Bay Afro-American Community,
as well as several articles in museum journals.
     A graduate of American University, he is adjunct professor of
museum studies at George Washington University, serves on the Council
of the Association for State and Local History, the editorial board of
The Public Historian and the Accreditation Committee of the American
Association of Museums. He also is a documentary filmmaker.
     On Friday, Dec. 1, at the same time and location, Lauryn
Guttenplan Grant, assistant general counsel of the Smithsonian
Institute, will speak on "Copyright Issues Facing Museums in an
Electronic Age." Her talk is cosponsored by the Department of Art
Conservation.
