M. Sussman makes second challenge to benefit library
Following upon last year's successful effort, Marvin Sussman,
Unidel Professor Emeritus of Human Behavior, has announced another
challenge gift to benefit the Morris Library.
Through Dec. 31, the 1995 Sussman Challenge Gift will match
pledges that support library activities up to $10,000.
According to Sussman, several faculty and colleagues offered
positive comments about his 1994 fundraising challenge, and this was
one of the factors in his decision to sponsor a similar effort this
year.
Sussman explained that he is making this year's gift in memory of
his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sandra Sussman, who died unexpectedly Oct.
15 in Atlanta.
According to John Clayton, assistant director of University
development, last year's effort resulted in the library receiving a
total of $30,000-$10,000 from the Sussman Challenge Gift, $10,510.50
from faculty and staff, $8,765.83 from alumni and friends and an
additional $723.67 from Sussman.
Some contributors, Clayton said, gave contributions as Christmas
gifts to the library with instructions to purchase books on a subject
that was of special interest to the honored family member or friend.
Before he retired in 1988, Sussman established the Marvin B.
Sussman Asklepios Book Fund in the Morris Library. Named after the
Greek god of healing, the Asklepios fund is used for the purchase of
interdisciplinary books that link the social, behavioral and humanity
sciences with the natural and physical sciences, using a holistic
approach. A specially designed book plate identifies the books
acquired.
Donors to the current fundraising effort may specify whatever
library activities they wish to support.
