Martha Carothers, art, "Everything Old Is New Again: The
Letterpress Book," at American Institute of Graphic Arts' sixth
biennial national conference, Sept. 28-Oct. 1, Seattle.
Members of the Department of Theatre made presentations, gave
workshops and assisted in productions during the summer: Joann
Browning, panelist, "Successful Models for Promotion and Tenure
for Theatre Movement Educators" and a workshop, "PILATES-based
Exercises for Actors," and Catherine Fitzmaurice,a workshop,
"Destructuring/Restructuring the Breathing," at the Association
for Theatre in Higher Education national conference, Aug. 8-12,
San Francisco. Fitzmaurice also conducted voice and Shakespeare
workshops at Temple University and New York City's Musical
Theatre Works, Circle-in-the Square and at Columbia University
and served as vocal coach for Arms and the Man and Romeo and
Juliet at Hartford State and for Private Lives at Princeton
University. Pete Brakhage served as production assistant for the
Newark United Methodist Church production of 100 Percent Chance
of Rain. Rick Cunningham served as production manager for the
Colonial Theatre's production of Macbeth, Westerly, R.I. William
Bowning presented "Extracting Information From CAD Drawings," at
United States Institute for Theatre Technology national
conference, and he also designed scenery and lighting for
Draussen Vor der Tur in Trier, Germany, and for the Professional
Theatre Training Program production of Mother Courage, which
toured Germany in June. Gerald Reese was the production manager
and Susan Sweeney played the role of Mother Courage in that PTTP
touring production. Barbara Hughes-Lampros served as costume shop
manager for the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival. Sanford Robbins
conducted master classes in acting at the Podium Theatre Festival
in Moscow. Eileen Smitheimer was lighting and sound designer for
the Miniature Theatre of Chester, Pa. Peter Vagenas served as
producer of the advanced technical production arts and crafts
workshop for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology,
Chesapeake Section, conference.
AWARDS
Kathryn L. Kotula, animal and food sciences, was presented the
1995 achievement award of the American Meat Science Association,
at the joint meeting of the 41st annual International Congress of
Meat Science and Technology and the 48th annual Reciprocal Meat
Conference, Aug. 29, San Antonio. The award recognizes innovative
and agressive leadership of young members who have demonstrated
skills in research and technology.
SERVICE
William Browning, theatre, has been appointed associate editor
for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology
publication, and Eileen Smitheimer, theatre, was appointed to the
institute's Sound Commission Liaison for Gender Bias.
