Capitol Steps to offer political satire on Oct. 28
For political satire at its best, catch The Capitol Steps in
concert for two shows, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, in
Mitchell Hall.
This troupe- composed of current and former congressional
staffers- performs original and irreverent musical comedy routines
across the country. Known as "the only group in Washington that tries
to be funnier than Congress," the Capitol Steps monitors events and
personalities on Capitol Hill, in the Oval Office and in other centers
of power and prestige around the world and presents them, peppered
with its inimitable style of musical comedy and parody.
The group was formed in 1981 by three staffers for U.S. Sen.
Charles Percy who were asked to provide entertainment for a Christmas
party. Instead of going the traditional route, they decided to
investigate headlines and political topics of the day to create new
lyrics for familiar tunes.
Since then, the Capitol Steps has recorded 14 albums, including
its two Clinton albums Lord of the Fries and The Joy of Sax. The group
has appeared on Good Morning America, The Late Show, Entertainment
Tonight, Nightline, The Today Show and 20/20, as well as dozens of
times on National Public Radio.
The group has been invited to perform for Presidents Ford,
Reagan, Bush and Clinton, and many celebrities and politicians,
including some of its targets, have joined in, including Vice
President Al Gore, Sam Donaldson, Larry King, Pat Robertson and former
President Bush, who has been quoted as saying, "The Capitol Steps have
made it easier to leave public life."
Tickets for the Newark performances are available now at the
Hartshorn box office, telephone 831-2204. Admission is $16 for the
public, $14 for UD faculty, staff and senior citizens and $12 for
students.
The performance is part of the University of Delaware Performing
Arts Series.
