Matriarchy topic of public program
     "Leah Behind the Veil: The Divided Matriarchy in Hebrew
Scriptures, Midrash, Dickens, Freud and Woody Allen" is the topic of a
free public lecture by Lori Lefkowitz of Kenyon College, scheduled at
4:30, Thursday, Oct. 26, in Room 110 of Memorial Hall.
     This lecture is sponsored by the Frank and Yetta Chaiken Center
for Jewish Studies at the University.


Jerry, Juveniles to rock in Bacchus
     Jerry Elderly & The Juveniles will rock at 8:30 tonight in the
Bacchus Theatre in the Perkins Student. The two-hour show will feature
old favorites and new songs for listening and dancing. Admission is
free.
     The group also will present its annual Benefit for Emmaus House
concert, for ages 13-99, from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15, at the New
Century Club, located at Haines Street and East Delaware Avenue.
     Suggested minimum donation is $6. Call 737-4589 to reserve

Women celebrate the right to vote
     Wilmington Women in Business is celebrating the 75th anniversary
of women's right to vote with a dinner meeting highlighting the
National Museum of Women in the Arts exhibition, "Artful Advocacy:
Cartoons from the Woman Suffrage Movement."
     Trace Schpoero Fitzpatrick, exhibition coordinator at the
National Museum of Women in the Arts, is the guest speaker.
     The dinner meeting begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and
dinner at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Gold Ballroom of the
Hotel du Pont.
     Cost is $28 for members and $32 for nonmembers.

Space celebration scheduled Oct. 21
     The University's fifth annual Celebration of Space: A Day to
Explore Physics, Astronomy and Space Science will be held from 8:30
a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, in Sharp Laboratory.
     NASA astronaut Nancy Currie will be featured speaker. She will
give a general interest talk on NASA and its space activities.
     The day also will include presentations by members of the UD
Department of Physics and Astronomy on the use of multimedia and
Internet resources in teaching and research.
     Activities will begin with a continental breakfast and
registration from 8:30-9:30 a.m. A registration fee of $5 will cover
lunch and all activities. Advanced registration is required.
     The program is sponsored by the Bartol Research Institute and the
Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Evening of poetry, jazz in Loudis Hall
     "Poetry and Jazz," a recital by poets Kristine Dimitrova and
Vladimir Trendafilov and composer, tenor and soprano sax and flute
player Vesselin Nikolov, will be presented at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct.
25, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
     Roland Flint of Georgetown University will present the program.

Series on diversity continues Oct. 25
     A series of free public teleconferences, entitled "Putting the
Pieces of Diversity Together," is scheduled through February.
     Upcoming programs in the series include
        * "Educating Students with Disabilities: A Shared
          Responsibility," 1:30-3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, in
          Pearson Hall auditorium;
        * "Multicultural Education: Valuing Diversity in the
          Classroom," 1-3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, in Room 006 Willard
          Hall Education Building; and
        * "Global Education: Bringing the World into the Classroom," 1-
          3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, in Pearson Hall auditorium.
     The series is free and open to the public. Parking is available
in the pay-to-park lot (#57) on Academy Street for all programs,
except the Nov. 3 session in the Willard Hall Education Building. On
that date, parking will be in lot #17 on Main Street.

'Purlie' musical this month in Wolf
     The musical Purlie, based on a play by Ossie Davis, will be
presented this month by the Black Student Theatre in 100 Wolf Hall.
     Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, Oct.
20-21 and 27-28. In addition, a 2 p.m. performance is scheduled on
Oct. 28.
     Tickets, at $5 for the general public and $3 for students, will
be available at the door and at the Perkins Student Center box office.

Newark Symphony concert on Oct. 22
     The Newark Symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22,
in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
     R. Clipper Erickson is the featured pianist in a program that
will feature works by Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven.
     Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10 for the
general public, $8 for seniors and $6 for students.

Safety tips talk in the Rodney Room
     A program on "Personal Safety: Sexual Assault Awareness and
Prevention" will be presented at noon today in the Rodney Room of the
Perkins Student Center.
     Sgt. Pam Marshak of the Delaware State Police Crime Prevention
Office will discuss common sense tips to help both men and women avoid
becoming crime victims.
     Audience members are invited to bring their own lunches.
Beverages will be provided.
     The program is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week 1995.


Weight-control programs offered
     Interested employees are encouraged to sign up for a  six-week
weight-management program, to be held from 5-6 p.m.,Tuesdays, from
Oct. 24-Nov. 28, in Room 236 Alison Hall.
     A registered dietitian will cover a variety of topics, such as
reducing dietary fat, behavior modification and exercise.
     There also are a few spaces left in the class being held at noon
on Tuesdays in the Student Center.
     The program cost is 35 Wellness Dollars.
