United Way: Making it work
I am president of the board of the Wilmington Senior Center, the
oldest senior center facility in the state, founded in the mid-1950s.
People come to us for a wide range of social and recreational
activities. For example, we offer classes and help seniors get jobs
through our job placement center. Our tenant survival program assists
people who have difficulty making a rent payment.
"During the heat wave this past summer, we helped distribute fans
donated by various companies. Issues involving older adults are my
academic area of expertise, and I get a lot of satisfaction out of
seeing the real world side of my field. Working with the center is a
great opportunity to give something back to the community."
