C.P. Huang named chairperson
C.P. Huang, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering,
is the new chairperson of the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering.
Joining the then Department of Civil Engineering in 1974, Huang
said he has seen many changes in the field, including the expanded
focus on environmental issues. "The department's new name reflects the
reality and expansion of the civil engineering profession," he said.
Huang said he is looking forward to serving as chairperson. "I
view myself as a coordinator of a strong faculty who excel as
researchers and teachers. The department's graduate program is ranked
37th nationally, according to a recent National Research Council
survey, and the department has attracted high quality undergraduate
and graduate students," he said.
Currently, there are approximately 250 undergraduates and 125
graduate students enrolled in the department, which offers graduate
degrees in such fields as ocean and coastal engineering, structure
engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources, transportation
and environmental engineering.
In the future, Huang said he hopes to initiate internships and co-
op programs for students to gain hands-on experience in their fields.
Huang's research focuses on the removal of soil and water
contaminants. Currently, he is working on a project for the Delaware
Solid Waste Authority, developing a pilot plant that can filter 5
gallons of waste per minute and that can be moved from site to site.
A graduate of National Taiwan University, Huang has master's and
doctoral degrees from Harvard University. He has published more than
150 scientific research papers and serves as editor of Industrial and
Hazardous Wastes and as co-editor of Aquatic Chemistry.
Among his awards, he has received the Outstanding Researcher of
the Year Award and the Outstanding Environmental Service Award from
the Overseas Chinese Environmental Engineers and Scientists
Association and the Excellence in Service Award from the American
Society of Civil Engineers.
