To publish or not to publish?
Q: How do I publish departmental information on the Web?
A: First, the department head designates staff member(s) to develop
and maintain Web documents.
A designated staff member must have an active account on the
central UNIX system and should have converted his or her original user
number to an alphabetic username.
The department head sends
e-mail to www@udel.edu, with a copy to each designated staff member,
requesting the creation of an account on the central Web server. This
message must authorize the designated staff member (or members) as the
maintainer of the documents, and it must include the username of the
staff member. If only one person is designated, the department's
directory will have the username of that person, unless otherwise
requested by the department head.
The department head and designated maintainer will be notified
when the central Web account has been created and will receive
instructions on how to log in to this account.
When documents are ready for publication, the department head
sends e-mail to www@udel.edu stating the filename of the home page
(i.e., the first document the user should access), which page the link
should appear on and any text to accompany the link.
Q: Where can I announce my department's Web documents?
A: The Web's "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) document has a list
of places at which you can announce your Web documents. The URL
(address) for this document is
http://sunsite.unc.edu/boutell/faq/publicizing.html
Q: How do I activate my account on the central UNIX system?
A: Bring your valid University ID to 002 Smith Hall; the Student
Services Building; Harrington Commons; Cannon Lab, Lewes, Del.; or the
Jason Building, Georgetown, Del. At the "Password Changing Station,"
swipe your ID card through the card reader. You will be assigned your
user number and asked to set your password. Your account will be
active the following day.
Q: How do I change my user number to an alphabetic username?
A: Log in to the central UNIX system and type the command
username
at the UNIX prompt. Follow the instructions on the screen to select a
username.
