Students test drive the Internet

Guided by some Internet-savvy students, more than 400 new
students took a short
cruise on the Internet at the Harrington computing site. For one full
day, the site was available for drop-in, hands-on introductory
sessions designed for new students.
Seven student Internet guides and one professional computing
staff member answered questions about computing resources on campus,
directed students to the Electronic Community Citizenship Exam (ECCE)
stations, gave tips on setting secure passwords, presented e-mail
demonstrations and helped students find information on the Web.
Students said they "liked the 'hands-on' approach so that we
could learn on our own." Most seemed to feel that setting up their e-
mail account and learning to get around on the Internet were the best
features of the orientation, and many commented that the friendly and
knowledgeable student guides made it a very valuable and positive
experience.
