New Spirit Ambassadors to premiere at Homecoming

The University is looking for a few good men and women students
to serve as UD Spirit Ambassadors, chosen on the basis of their school
spirit and their active involvement in the University community in
student organizations or as volunteers.
Being selected a UD Spirit Ambassador is an honor designed to
recognize outstanding service to the University, and the designation
continues until a student graduates, according to Chris Cook,
coordinator of Greek affairs.
"Students told us that they wished to replace the Homecoming king
and queen with a new kind of honor, and we have listened to their
suggestions," Cook said.
Student candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by
faculty, students or members of the staff. Nominees must be registered
full-time students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and have earned a
minimum of 30 credits. The deadline for applications is Oct. 2.
After the applications have been received, a committee of
students, including Lorenzo Lacey, Black Student Union; plus Ann
Raymond, staff asisstant, RISE (Resources to Insure Successful
Engineers) program; Kenneth Lomax, associate professor, agricultural
engineering; Barbara Owens, Alumni Association president; and graduate
student Trisha Roberts, will screen the candidates and narrow them to
a maximum of 20.
All the candidates will be highlighted in The Review and in
UpDate. Beginning Oct. 9, the entire University community is invited
to take part in a poll to select the candidate of their choice, by
dialing UDPhone (837-8683). Each caller will be allowed one selection.
UD Spirit Ambassadors will be chosen on the basis of committee
recommendations and the polling response. The winners will be
announced at the Homecoming pep rally on Oct. 13.
According to Cook, UD Spirit Ambassadors will receive prizes and
be treated as VIPs on campus. They will act as an ad hoc committee,
meeting periodically with the president, and will be invited to
participate at UD functions.
One or two outstanding UD Spirit Ambassadors will be selected for
the T. Muncy Keith Award, a $1,000 scholarship honoring the 1922
alumnus and honorary lifetime member of the Alumni Association Board
of Directors.
For information on the UD Spirit Ambassadors competition, stop by
the Student Activities Office in the Perkins Student Center or the
Center for Black Culture, or call 831-2631.
